We are pleased to announce the launch of the research project “Integrated morphological, genetic and biochemical identification and characterization of wild edible mushrooms in Croatia – GenBioM.” The project is hosted by the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Agriculture and brings together a multidisciplinary team of experts in mycology, molecular biology, soil science, environmental analytics and food biotechnology.
GenBioM aims to document and characterize wild edible mushrooms across diverse Croatian habitats using a combined approach that includes field sampling, morphological identification, DNA barcoding and biochemical profiling. This integrative methodology will generate reliable scientific data that support biodiversity research, food-safety evaluation and the sustainable use of native fungal resources.
During the first phase of the project, the team will initiate field surveys, establish laboratory workflows and develop a reference database for morphological and molecular traits. Collaboration among partner institutions will ensure high-quality data collection, advanced analytical interpretation and effective dissemination of findings.
The GenBioM project represents a significant advancement in understanding Croatia’s fungal diversity and contributes to broader efforts in environmental monitoring and responsible resource management. We look forward to sharing progress, results and publications as the project develops.
